Watch Out

Dropbox never uses the word 'cancel' in the UI — everything is framed as 'downgrading.' The final button reads 'I still want to downgrade,' which is deliberately confusing for users looking for a cancel option.

The confirmation screen uses reversed button hierarchy: 'Keep subscription' is the prominent primary button, while the actual cancel/downgrade option is a barely visible ghost button at the bottom of the page.

The cancellation flow forces you through 5+ retention screens (plan value summary, cheaper plan offers, reason survey, 'are you sure?' confirmation) — documented as taking 9 clicks minimum to complete.

Free trials auto-convert to annual billing, not monthly. Users expecting a monthly charge discover they've been billed the full annual amount (e.g. $120+ for Plus, $621 for team plans).

Cancelling a free trial removes access immediately, unlike cancelling a paid plan which runs to the end of the billing period.

Deleting the Dropbox app does NOT cancel the subscription. Many users delete the app and keep getting charged for months or years.

Letting your payment card expire does not cancel the plan. Banks often auto-forward charges to replacement cards.

If you have multiple Dropbox accounts, you may be cancelling on the wrong one. Use Dropbox's transaction ID lookup tool to identify which account is being billed.

If you subscribed via the iOS App Store or Google Play, the cancel button does not appear on the Dropbox website at all. Many users waste significant time on the website before discovering this.

Annual plans get zero prorated refund. Cancel a $120/year plan after month 1 and you lose the remaining 11 months.

EU, UK, and Turkey users have a 14-day cooling-off refund window — but must contact support manually to claim it.

What Happens After You Cancel

Access

You keep full access until the end of your current billing period, then your account downgrades to Dropbox Basic (2 GB free).

Your data

All files and folders are retained in your account — they are not deleted. If your stored data exceeds 2 GB, Dropbox stops syncing to your devices but does not delete the files. You can still access everything via the web interface.
